Intel Pentium Processors

Knowing Intel Pentium Processors

Intel is a company that is known to manufacture processors. Intel stands for Integrated Electronics Corporation, and was established in 1968. The headquarters of the company is in California State of America. The company manufactures graphic chips, motherboard chipsets, flash memory, embedded processors and network cards. Intel Pentium processors are household names.

Intel Pentium processors are the fifth generation processors. It is also referred to as Intel P5. The Pentium brand from the company is very successful and today no computer is complete without the Pentium processors on the Intel.

Some of the other generation Intel Pentium processors are,

* Pentium Dual Core

* Pentium Pro

* Pentium Extreme Edition

* Pentium II

* Pentium E

* Pentium III

* Pentium M

* Pentium 4

* Pentium D

The sixth generation Intel Pentium processors are Pentium Pro (x86).its serves the purpose of high-end chip for desktop and a server. Pentium Pro performs the function of both quad and dual processor. It was introduced in 1995 and its Intel code is 80521. The product was launched in the market with the aim to carry the company in the next phase of technology. Some of the competitors are,

* IDT WinChip

* AMD K5 and K6

* MII and Cyrix 6x86

Other brand of Intel Pentium processors are Pentium D. It is 64-bit dual-core processor. It was launched in the market in 2005. The code name of first Pentium D processor was Smithfield. It made use of 90 nm process and the series was 8xx. Smithfield was followed by 9xx series called Presler, and uses 65 nm processes. However, there were not many changes or alterations in the new model. Also, working of Presler requires noisy fans for cooling purposes.

Another Intel P6 is Pentium III. It was launched in 1999. Also, it contains transistors over 9.5 million. The model is quite similar to Pentium II. The installation of serial number and SSE set of instructions is the major difference between Pentium III and Pentium II. For high end version in Pentium III, Xeon is used and for lower end versions Celeron is used.

Pentium 4 was launched in the market as the successor of the Pentium III. CPU of Pentium M was the basis of Pentium Dual-Core, Xeon, Core 2 and Celeron.

Cores of Pentium III are,

* Tualatin

* Coppermine

* Katmai

* Coppermine-T

Coppermine-T was a core that was able to work at system of low voltage. It was mainly developed for motherboards of the nature of dual-processor.

Intel code 80525 or Katmai is quite similar to Pentium II. Its initial speed was 500 and 450MHz. the SECC2 cartridge facilitated direct contact of heat sink with CPU. SL35D model was a successful Katmai version. Although originally it was meant to have a speed of 450 MHz but later it was developed to run at the speed of 600 MHz.

Tualatin was the third Intel version. Released in 2001 and 2002, it had speed of 1.13, 1.4, 1.0 and 1.26 GHz.

Some of the competitors of Intel Pentium processors are,

* WinChip

* Nx586

* mP6

* 5k86

* 5x86
